ENGLISH CLUB

The Drama Title UNTAMED HARRISSON

Characters:
George
Hazel

George: a middle aged ma n having an intelligent face wears a handicap radio in his ear.
He is the father of Harrison Bergeron in the jail.
Hazel: wife of George, about forty years with a beautiful look but a blank expression.

Setting: The drawing room with a TV placed at the corner, a sofa and two chairs along
With tea poi in the middle of the room is seen in the scene. Two portraits are exhibited on the wall.
Time: The future (evening)

Scene 1

(As curtain rises, we see George and his wife, Hazel sitting together on the sofa watching TV. On the TV Screen a group of dancers who are burdened with heavy bags on their shoulders and faces masked perform a dance.
George; Oh, my son…..my son..(Suddenly, his expression is changed. He seems to be in deep pain, a terrible thing explodes in his ear. ).
Hazel; Oh dear, what happened ? You look so tired. Why don’t you put that thing on the
sofa for a while? (Pointing at the machine in his ear. ) I don‘t mind if you’re equal to me for a while.
George; Oh, don’t you bother about it? It’s just a part of me now. (Curtain falls)

Scene 2

Characters:
George
Hazel
Dancers in the TV Screen
News reader in the TV Screen
Harrison


Time: The future (evening)
Setting (George and Hazel, in their drawing room sitting on a sofa watching an important
dance program on TV)

George: Hay Hazel, my bosom, you see how beautifully the dancers are performing (patting her shoulder and moving very closer to her)
Hazel: How darling, it’s ok (she looks at him with her sleepy eyes) don’t you know that watching enthusiastically on dancers is unlawful according to the government (Holding his hand very firmly)

George: It’s ok dear; I am not unlawfully getting interested on them.
(Smiling at her and kissing her warmly)
Don’t you see my mental handicap radio fitted on my ear?
Hazel: Hi George (pointing towards the TV set) you see on the TV. An important news
bulletin is being flashed
George: Oh, it’s right. What a pity (becomes impatient) a shrewd announcer interrupts
the program, a jolt on my beating heart
Hazel: Hi my dear, the man is f acing speech impediment (pointing to TV set) Oh, what
happened.
George: Right dear. I think, he is going to read sensational news
Hazel: Yes dear, you’re right (moving closer him as if afraid of something, she slants on
his shoulder)
George: Yes my sweetie, (putting his hand around her shoulder as if to pacify her) the
news reader is really facing speech impediment. You see dear, (making her closely watching the TV) the man is going to hand over the news bulletin paper to wards one of the dancers. (Then curtain falls)

Scene 3
Characters:
News reader in the TV Screen
The announcer-dancer

Setting: (The news reader appears on the screen. He attempts to read important news.
But he can’t do so)
Time: The future (evening)
The news reader: I can’t read this news out. I’m really getting chocked. Would you read
out this news, please?
The announcer-dancer: why not, please give it to me, I can do so. (The news reader hands
over the news bulletin to one of the dancers. )

(The announcer-dancer: Ladies and gentlemen (she calls them with a sweet voice.). I know that my voice is very melody. I really apologize . And comprehend that the important news to be announced not in this sweet voice but in an interrupted and a grief – voice. “Harrison Bergeron aged fourteen has just escaped from jail. He was held on suspicion plotting to overthrow the government. He is a genius and an athlete, is under handicapped and should be regarded as extremely dangerous)

(Suddenly a police photograph of Harrison Bergeron is flashed on the screen. He wore a tremendous pair of earphones on his ear instead of a little ear radio. His spectacles are with thickly wavy lenses. The spectacles are intended to make him not only half blind, but to give him splitting headaches) (He is seen as wearing a scrap metal all over his body weighing Three hundred pounds. He looks like a walking junkyard. He wears a red rubber ball for a nose, keeps his eyebrows shaved off, cover his even white teeth with black caps) (Then curtain falls)



Scene 4
Characters:
George
Hazel

Setting: (George and Hazel, in their drawing room sitting on a sofa watching TV)
Time: The future (evening)

George: Oh, dear Hazel, don’t you see the photograph of our son on the screen? It is a
police photograph.
Hazel: Yes dear, our son wears a tremendous pair of earphones on his ear instead of ear
radio.
George: Yes Hazel, A wonderful change is on his spectacles. They are with thickly wavy
lenses. They are intended to make him not only half blind, but to give him splitting headaches
Hazel: You see my George; our son wears a scrap metal all over his body with Three
hundred pounds. Oh my son.
George: Don’t be so emotional it is violation of the law. You see my dear Hazel, Our son
looks like a walking junkyard
Hazel: Oh George, look at our son‘s nose. He wears a red rubber ball for a nose
George: Oh, God, , His eyebrows are shaved off, and his white teeth covered with black caps (Then curtain falls)

Scene 5
Characters:
The announcer-dancer
Time: The future (evening)
Settings: (stage with dancers and Harrison)

The announcer-dancer: Hai ladies and gentlemen, don’t try to reason with Harrison, if
you see his body this like. I repeat (with her loud and pompous voice) don’t try to reason with him
(Then there is a shriek of a door being torn from its hinges. There are screams and barking cries of consternation rose from the TV. His photograph is jumped again and again as though dancing to the tune of an earthquake. ) (Then curtain falls)







Scene 6

Characters:
George
Hazel
Settings: (drawing room with TV)
Time: The future (evening)

George: Something is going to happened. Don’t you, dear, hear a shriek of a door being
torn from its hinges?
Hazel: Yes I also hear screams and barking cries of consternation on the TV
George: Hey Hazel, Do you feel an earthquake (looking at his wife’s gloomy face.)
Hazel: yes, something likes that.
George: Hazel, don’t get sleepy, the photograph of our son is on TV. Oh my son.
Hazel: yes, dear, it is our son, Harrison Bergeron.
George: I too would like to walk and dances like my son
(George is in a dancing mood. He tries to dance, walks like his son and acts like his son, then the mental handicapped radio sounds like as the sound of an automobile collision in his head).
Oh, my ear, sound of an automobile collision is in my head. Something exploded in my ear. (Then curtain falls)

Scene 7a

Characters:
George
Hazel
Harrison

Time: The future (evening)
Setting (George and Hazel, in their drawing room is sitting on a sofa watching an important dancing program on TV)

George: Hazel, I feel something bad in my head and ear. I can’t open my eyes
Hazel: Oh, George, don’t be so upset, it is part of yours. Don’t you forget that we are
in the year of 2081? So try to open your eyes. Come to your position.

George: Yes dear, I am trying. (He sees the photograph of Harrison filled the TV
screen). Yes I see the photograph of my son, Harrison filled the TV
Hazel: yes my beloved son is in the centre of the studio. He uprooted the studio. What
he is going to do now?
George: Yes, the knob of the uprooted studio is in his hand
Hazel: Dancers, musicians and announcers cowered on their knees before him for mercy,
fearing that they are going to die.

Scene 7b

Settings: (stage with dancers and Harrison)
Time: The future (evening)

(Harrison captures the centre of attraction. He tries to rule over others. )
Harrison: I am the emperor (He announces. He repeats the announcement) don’t you
hear that I am the Emperor. Everybody must do what I say at once. (He shows his impatience stamping his foot and shaking the whole studio.

Scene 7c

Settings: (drawing room with TV)
Time: The future (evening)

George: What a pity my son, you see, Hazel, he stamps his foot and shakes the studio.
Hazel: Yes, he removes the handicaps bags from his body
George: yes he smashes his headphone and spectacles against the wall.
Hazel: He flings away his rubber ball nose.
(Harrison moves forward and empowers others). (Then curtain falls)



Scene 8
Characters:
Harrison
Dancer-Empress

Settings: (stage with dancers and Harrison)
Time: The future (evening)

Harrison: I am selecting my Empress (He holds the hand of the one of the dancers) You
are my dear Empress.
Dancer-Empress: Oh, my lord. I am at your mercy.
Harrison: why at my mercy. You’re my queen. Let’s rule this country. You need not
have the mental and physical handicaps (He plucks the mental handicap from her ear. He snaps of her physical handicaps with marvelous delicacy) (Then curtain falls)










Scene 9

Characters:
George
Hazel
Settings: (drawing room with TV)
Time: The future (evening)


George: Oh my son removes all the handicaps and even her mask from the dancer
empress. How beautiful my daughter in law is.
Hazel: Yes George, my daughter in law is really beautiful. (Then curtain falls)

Scene 10
Characters:
Harrison
Dancer-Empress
Two police officers

Settings: (stage with dancers and Harrison)
Time: The future (evening)

Harrison: (turning to his dancer-empress) Hai my queen shall we show these people what
the meaning of the word dance.
Empress: Your majesty my lord (kissing his hand)
Harrison: Yes, play the music (in a commanding way)
(Both Harrison and The empress merely listened to the music for a while, as though synchronizing their heartbeats with it. They shifted their weights to their toes. And then, in an Explosion of joy and grace, into the air they sprang!)
Harrison: Hey, dear listen to the music. Let’s shift our body weight to our toes.
Empress: Yes, Your majesty my lord.
(They leaped like deer on the moon. Not only were the laws of the land abandoned, but the law of gravity and the laws of motion as well.)
(While they were dancing forgetting everything, the government agents entered the studio with the loaded gun. They roared like lions. They commanded to stop the music and dance. They at once noted the presence of the Harrison, the culprit)
The Police Officer (1): Harrison, surrender (he repeats the command)
The Police Officer (2): surrender, surrender (They roared like lions.) (Harrison
Discarded their command and went on his dance with the empress. The police
Officers shot them dead without further notice. Ha….. aa…… Harrison and the
Empress cried loudly and fell dead.) (The Police officers commanded the others on the stage. The musicians, the dancers and the announcers were asked to get their handicaps back on.)
The Police Officer (1): Hey, musicians, dancers, and announcers, get your handicaps
Back on. (They immediately get their handicaps back on.) Then curtain falls



Scene 11

Characters:
George
Hazel

Settings: (While curtain rises, George and Hazel are closely watching the TV Set) It was Then that George and Hazel noticed the blackout on the television set. They try to Hide their grief. Even though, they sometimes outbursts their cry. Then advise Each other not to do so
Time: The future (evening)

George: ‘Have you been crying?’ (He asked Hazel)
Hazel: ‘Yes,’ (she said.)
George: What about?’ (He asked.)
Hazel: ‘I forget,’ (she said.)
George: ‘Forget sad things,’ (said George)
.Hazel: ‘I always do,’ (said Hazel) (George wanted to say something. But then there
Was the sound of a gun in his head? He winced.)
(curtain falls)
